When the late Mrs Gray acquired The Nare in 1989 as her retirement project, she resolved to make it the highest rated and most luxurious country house hotel in Cornwall. With almost 100 years of family hotel ownership in the county her experience in the hotel business was unparalleled and she embarked on a tasteful refurbishment programme to achieve her aims.In 2000 her grandson, Toby Ashworth, became Managing Director and in 2004, the sole proprietor of the hotel. He is dedicated to continuing the work started by his grandmother, and today the hotel is Cornwall’s highest rated AA four star hotel and the ONLY four red star hotel in the county. He continues to invest in the hotel, constantly refurbishing where it is needed during the quieter winter months, and the hotel is luxuriously furnished with antiques and art, beautifully presented lounges and restaurants, spacious bedrooms with the very latest technology and modern bathrooms.
However, the success of the hotel does not only lie in the wonderful coastal location, the fine surroundings, nor indeed in the excellent food in both our traditional Dining Room, or two-rosette Quarterdeck Restaurant. All of those factors, of course, play a great part in bringing our guests back to the hotel year after year, some of them many times a year. The REAL success of the hotel lies in the caring staff who work here, many of them long term, some with as many as 20 years service. The understated thoughtful service that goes so naturally with the elegance of the hotel, the anticipation of our guests’ needs, and the dedication, commitment and caring disposition of our staff, which ensures that their actions inspire memories with our guests is the key to the success of The Nare, and it is heartening to hear this accolade from our guests week after week.
