Meet The Nare Team
Perhaps the single most important aspect of your time at The Nare will be the people who look after you. Here are some of the key staff that you will meet during your stay with us:Julie Johns: Reservations/Assistant Manageress
Julie is the longest serving member of staff that we have at The Nare. A local girl, she started working here whilst she was still at school. In the time she has been here she has worked in just about every part of the hotel, this means that there is not a lot that gets past Julie. She's well known to all our regular guests as someone who can sort things out. We wouldn't be without her and we think you'll feel the same.
Samantha Fitzgerald: Personnel/Assistant Manageress
Samantha joined The Nare 18 months ago as Assistant Manageress with responsibility for managing the staff and the day to day running of the hotel. She has worked in some beautiful hotels including the Taycreggan (just outside Oban), Blooms and the Kensington House Hotel (London), and the Craigellachie Hotel (Speyside), as well as considerable experience gained working in private clubs in London. She has dealt with most of the issues that crop up in life in a successful hotel. Samantha is now enjoying the fresh air of Cornwall as well as ensuring the smooth running of day to day matters at The Nare.
Richard James: Head Chef
Richard was born and brought up in Cornwall. His interest in food started at an early age at home. He started working as a chef from the age of 15 and early success encouraged him to make a career of his talents. After qualifying at catering college he was appointed as a commis chef in the kitchens at The Carlyon Bay Hotel. Richard joined The Nare in 1993 as chef tournant and was soon promoted to junior sous under the renowned Chef Malcolm Sparks. Since then he has not looked back and in 2005 was appointed Head Chef. Richard maintains the high standard of traditional british cuisine expected at The Nare. His favourite dish is Beef Wellington with braised red cabbage, gratin dauphinoise, served with a Madeira jus.
Lloyd Stevens: Restaurants Manager
A Cornish boy, Lloyd was born in Penzance. After gaining his qualifications and working at The Porthminster Hotel, Lloyd headed to Manhatten where he worked for 5 years as a Personal Assistant. In this role he traveled all over the US and to many other parts of the world including Hong Kong, Egypt and Europe. On returning to the UK he worked in London before deciding to head back to Cornwall. He joined us three years ago as Quarterdeck Restaurant Manager before being asked to take on responsibility for both of our restaurants.
Ken Cracknell: Head Barman
One of our longest serving members of staff, Ken has been at The Nare for 29 years - a fantastic achievement in an industry notorious for high staff turnover. His personal style exemplifies the values of The Nare; a timeless elegance where charm, attention to detail and the utmost discretion mean everything. With a family history in Cornwall and in the licensed trade - his father ran the pub in Veryan and his uncle ran The Ship in Portloe - Ken joined The Nare in 1979. He is a familiar face to many of our guests and has mixed drinks for many generations of several families who frequent The Nare and for many of the more famous guests who have stepped through the doors of the hotel.
